September 11th Flights

3 of 4 Hijacked Planes Encounter No Resistance

Four jetliners carrying over 250 people disappeared in the melee of September 11th. Each aircraft was supposedly hijacked by a team of four or five Arab men armed with "boxcutters". Each of the flights traveled hundreds of miles over the Northeast Corridor after the alleged hijackings without encountering resistance from the air defense network.

The following table lists the times of important events, some of which are depicted graphically in the timeline. The 'takeover' column gives the time at which each flight went off course, an event which normally triggers the notification of NORAD within about two minutes. The 'reported' column gives the time at which Air Traffic Control or the FAA notified NORAD. The notifications of hijackings of both Flights 77 and 93 were qualified as suspected. No official explanation has been provided for the 18-minute delay in the case of Flight 11, or the 39-minute delay in the case of Flight 77.

flight origin target takeoff takeover reported crash
Flight 11 Boston Manhattan 7:59 8:20 8:38 8:46
Flight 175 Boston Manhattan 8:14 8:42 8:43 9:03
Flight 77 Dulles Washington, DC 8:20 8:46 9:25 9:38 ?
Flight 93 Newark Washington, DC ? 8:42 9:40 -- 10:06

The table combines data from diverse sources. The takeoff column reports times from a Washington Post article. 1   The takeover column gives the times that the planes veered off course, according to media reports referenced on the individual flight pages. The reported column gives the times that the FAA notified NEADS (NORAD) according to NORAD's 9/18/01 timeline. 2   The crashed column gives the times that Flights 11 and 175 crashed into the Twin Towers according to the seismic records from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY, and the time that Flight 93 crashed in PA according to the seismic record from the observatory at Standing Stone, PA. The time of the Pentagon crash, which did not generate a clear seismic signal, is taken from the 9/11 Commission Report.
